The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has further strengthened its political influence in Sirmaur district after its supported candidates, Shivani from Dadahu and Baldev Bhandari from Pachhad, were elected as the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Sirmaur Zila Parishad on Tuesday.

The election marks a significant victory for the BJP in the district’s local governance setup, where the party already held a dominant position with a clear majority. After the results were announced, Sirmaur Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Verma administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly elected representatives. The chairperson’s post was reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste women category.

The 17-member Sirmaur Zila Parishad witnessed a strong performance by BJP-backed candidates in the earlier elections, with the party winning 13 seats. The Congress managed to secure three seats, while one Independent member also won. With such a comfortable majority, the BJP’s victory in the election for the top positions was largely expected.

Welcoming the victory, BJP state president Dr Rajeev Bindal said the outcome reflected the public’s trust in the party’s development agenda and governance model. He stated that the result indicated growing support for the BJP in local bodies across Himachal Pradesh.

During his statement, Dr Bindal also criticised the Congress-led state government, alleging that Himachal Pradesh was facing challenges including increasing debt, unemployment and slow-paced development. He further claimed that several commitments made during the Assembly elections were yet to be fulfilled.

Several senior BJP leaders, including Shimla Member of Parliament Suresh Kashyap, Pachhad MLA Reena Kashyap, former Shillai MLA Baldev Tomar, and former Zila Parishad chairperson Dalip Chauhan, congratulated the newly elected representatives. They expressed confidence that Shivani and Baldev Bhandari would work towards improving rural infrastructure, addressing public issues and accelerating overall development in Sirmaur.

Political observers view the result as another important milestone for the BJP in Sirmaur, as the party continues to maintain a strong foothold in the district’s grassroots governance.
