The Congress party strengthened its hold over the Nurpur Municipal Council (MC) on Thursday as Niti Mahajan was elected unopposed as the Chairperson of the civic body. Sonia Soga was also elected unopposed as the Vice-Chairperson, marking a significant political victory for the party in the town.
The elections for the top posts were conducted under the supervision of the Nurpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). The process had earlier been postponed due to a lack of quorum during the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councillors, where internal disagreements reportedly emerged over the selection of the vice-chairperson candidate.
However, Congress leadership successfully resolved the differences ahead of the rescheduled election, paving the way for a smooth conclusion to the process.
According to officials, only one nomination was received for each of the two posts. As a result, Ward No. 4 councillor Niti Mahajan was declared elected as Chairperson, while Ward No. 6 councillor Sonia Soga assumed the position of Vice-Chairperson without facing any opposition.
Following their election, both leaders expressed gratitude to fellow councillors and residents of Nurpur for their support. They assured citizens that their priority would be the overall development of the town, including improvements in civic amenities and public services.
The announcement triggered celebrations among Congress workers and supporters, who organized a victory rally through various parts of the town. Newly elected councillors and senior party leaders also joined the procession, highlighting the party’s growing influence in the local body.
The outcome reflects a remarkable political turnaround in Nurpur. In the previous Municipal Council term, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enjoyed a comfortable 6-3 majority and formed the civic body administration. This time, however, Congress-backed candidates secured victory in six of the nine wards, while BJP-supported candidates managed to win only three seats.
Political observers view the development as a significant boost for Congress at the grassroots level, indicating changing voter preferences in the region. With the party now controlling the Municipal Council, expectations are high regarding governance and development initiatives in Nurpur over the coming years.
