Himachal Pradesh Heatwave Triggers Water Crisis in Solan, Over 15,000 Residents Face Shortages
A prolonged heatwave sweeping across Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district has triggered a serious water crisis, with shrinking natural water sources disrupting drinking water supply in dozens of rural areas. More than 15,000 residents across 77 villages are reportedly facing water shortages as temperatures continue to rise.
According to officials, temperatures in Solan have surged nearly 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal levels over the past week. The mercury has touched 35°C, significantly higher than the usual 30–31°C recorded during this period. The unusual rise in temperature, combined with an extended dry spell, has severely affected natural springs and water sources that support rural water supply schemes.
Water Supply Schemes Witness Sharp Decline
Data from the Jal Shakti Department (JSD) shows that 25 rural water supply schemes under the Dharampur division, including areas such as Kasauli and Parwanoo, have experienced a significant drop in water discharge.
Among these schemes:
- Six have recorded a decline of more than 75 percent.
- Six have witnessed a reduction between 25 and 50 percent.
- Thirteen schemes have reported a fall of up to 25 percent.
The declining water levels have increased pressure on local authorities and raised concerns among residents who depend on these sources for daily drinking and household needs.
Over 15,000 Residents Affected
Jal Shakti Department Superintending Engineer Sanjiv Soni confirmed that 77 rural habitations, with a combined population of 15,781 people, are currently experiencing water scarcity.
While rural communities continue to struggle, urban areas in the district have not reported any major water supply disruptions so far.
Villagers Forced to Arrange Water Independently
Despite the worsening situation, water tankers have not yet been deployed to many affected villages. As a result, several families have been forced to purchase water privately or rely on traditional springs and natural sources to meet their daily requirements.
The situation remains particularly challenging in Gandhol village under Kanda Panchayat in Kasauli. Residents living at the tail end of an aging half-inch water pipeline claim they have faced inadequate water supply for years and continue to depend on natural water sources for survival.
Delay in ₹102-Crore Giri Water Supply Project Raises Concerns
Local residents have linked the recurring water shortages to delays in the much-awaited ₹102-crore Giri Water Supply Scheme. The project was designed to provide reliable drinking water to 179 habitations in the Kasauli Assembly constituency.
Originally scheduled for completion in June 2023, the project deadline was later extended to March 2024. However, the scheme remains unfinished, leaving residents frustrated amid recurring summer water shortages.
Officials have cited multiple challenges behind the delay, including pending infrastructure work related to an electricity substation, difficulties in acquiring alternate land at Anech and Sihardi, and funding-related constraints.
Heatwave Highlights Growing Water Security Challenges
The ongoing crisis in Solan highlights the growing impact of extreme weather conditions on water availability in Himachal Pradesh. Experts warn that rising temperatures and prolonged dry periods could further strain rural water infrastructure in the coming years unless long-term solutions are implemented.
With summer conditions expected to persist, residents and local authorities remain hopeful for immediate relief measures as well as the timely completion of major water supply projects to prevent future shortages.
