The political war of words in Himachal Pradesh intensified on Tuesday after Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh strongly criticized the BJP for what he called “baseless and misleading” claims of victory in the recently concluded Panchayati Raj and urban local body elections.

Addressing the media, Vikramaditya Singh targeted Himachal BJP president Rajeev Bindal and challenged the party to prove that the winning candidates in the panchayat elections were officially backed by the BJP.

“Panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh have traditionally not been contested on party symbols or political lines. Claiming these results as a BJP victory is completely misleading,” the minister said.

Taking a direct swipe at the opposition, Vikramaditya stated that many candidates who won as Pradhans and Up-Pradhans succeeded because of their personal image, local connect and grassroots work rather than political affiliations.

“I dare Bindal ji to prove that those elected are BJP-backed candidates. These claims are being made only for cheap publicity and political mileage,” he added.

The Congress leader further emphasized that rural elections are largely influenced by local issues, social relations and individual credibility. According to him, Assembly elections remain the true indicator of public opinion on the performance of political parties and state governance.

The remarks come amid an ongoing political tussle between the Congress and BJP over interpreting the results of the local elections in Himachal Pradesh. While the BJP has projected the outcome as a sign of growing public support, Congress leaders maintain that panchayat polls cannot be viewed as a direct political mandate.

Political observers believe the exchange highlights the increasing political temperature in the state ahead of future electoral battles, with both parties trying to shape the public narrative around grassroots support.
