A candid interaction between Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and school students in Shimla district has grabbed attention after a Class 10 student raised a bold question about politics, democracy, and the qualifications required to become an MLA.

The Chief Minister had visited Government Senior Secondary School in Nerwa to encourage students to speak openly and share their concerns. However, the discussion took an unexpected turn when a teenage student questioned why politicians were not required to clear any examination before contesting elections.

The student pointed out that almost every profession in India demands merit-based qualifications or competitive exams, while those entering politics face no such requirement.

“Political parties should conduct some kind of exam before giving tickets. Candidates should at least have knowledge about the field they are entering,” the student said confidently, earning loud applause from fellow students present at the event.

The boy also expressed concern over the rising cost of elections, saying that politics was increasingly becoming accessible only to wealthy individuals. His remarks quickly became the highlight of the interaction and sparked conversations among attendees.

Responding to the student’s question, Chief Minister Sukhu said that elections themselves act as a test for political leaders, as the public evaluates MLAs every five years through voting. Despite the response, the student politely stood by his opinion, leaving many in the gathering impressed by his confidence and maturity.

The interaction also highlighted several issues faced by students in the region. A Class 10 girl questioned why the mid-day meal scheme ends after Class 8 and urged the government to extend the facility till Class 12.

“Aren’t we children too, sir?” she asked, drawing attention to the challenges faced by senior school students.

Calling it a “valuable suggestion,” the Chief Minister assured students that the proposal would be examined by the government.

Apart from policy-related discussions, younger students raised concerns about unhygienic washrooms, water shortage, poor road connectivity, and limited healthcare facilities in the area.

During the visit, the Chief Minister announced financial assistance of Rs 5 crore for the construction of a new school building. He also shared lunch with students during the programme.

School authorities revealed that student enrollment at the institution had increased significantly after its recent CBSE affiliation. The number of students reportedly rose from 959 last year to nearly 1,300 in the current academic session.

The viral interaction has since drawn praise on social media, with many people appreciating the confidence and awareness shown by the students, especially the Class 10 boy whose question reignited debate around political accountability and educational qualifications in Indian politics.
