The upcoming Dharamsala Municipal Corporation (MC) elections have turned into one of the most closely watched civic battles in Himachal Pradesh, with rebel leaders, Independent candidates and fresh political faces dramatically reshaping the contest ahead of polling day.

While the Congress and the BJP are directly facing each other in only four wards, the remaining 13 wards are witnessing triangular and multi-cornered contests, making the electoral outcome highly unpredictable. Political observers believe the presence of rebels and Independents could play a decisive role in determining the final composition of the 17-member municipal House.

54 Candidates in Fray for 17 Wards

A total of 54 candidates are contesting the Dharamsala MC elections this year, reflecting the growing political intensity in the hill city. Straight contests between the Congress and the BJP are limited to:

  • Ward No. 1 – Forsyth Ganj
  • Ward No. 3 – McLeodganj
  • Ward No. 5 – Khajanchi Mohalla
  • Ward No. 11 – Ramnagar

However, the real political heat is being felt in wards where rebel candidates and Independents have entered the race, creating complex vote equations for both major parties.

BJP Rebels Add New Twist to Dharamsala Civic Polls

The BJP’s strategy of introducing fresh faces and reshuffling its local leadership appears to have triggered dissatisfaction among senior leaders denied party tickets.

Former BJP Mayor Onkar Singh Nehria is contesting as an Independent candidate from Ward No. 2 Bhagsunag, while former Deputy Mayor Tajinder Kaur has also entered the fray independently from Ward No. 6 Kotwali Bazaar.

Both leaders hold strong influence at the grassroots level, and their independent campaigns are expected to directly impact the BJP’s traditional vote bank in these wards.

Political analysts believe the rebellion within the party could divide votes and potentially benefit Congress candidates in closely contested areas. The situation has also highlighted internal tensions within the BJP over the leadership’s decision to prioritise younger candidates over experienced faces.

Independents Could Become Key Players

Independent candidates are expected to emerge as crucial factors in several wards, especially:

  • Ward No. 12 – Barol
  • Ward No. 13 – Dari
  • Ward No. 14 – Kand
  • Ward No. 17 – Siddhbari

With multiple Independents in the race, even a small swing in votes could significantly influence the final results.

Local political observers say voter preferences in these wards remain highly fluid, making them some of the most unpredictable battlegrounds in the election.

Secretariat Ward Battle Draws Maximum Attention

Among all constituencies, the Secretariat ward has become the centre of public attention due to a unique family-linked political rivalry.

Congress candidate Shivani and BJP nominee Ashu, both daughters-in-law from the same extended family, are facing each other in what has now become a high-profile four-cornered contest after the entry of two Independent candidates.

The unusual family face-off has sparked widespread discussion among local residents and added an emotional dimension to the political contest.

BJP Faces Tough Test After Previous Electoral Setback

The elections are particularly important for the BJP, which had secured 10 out of 17 seats in the previous Dharamsala MC elections, while Congress managed to win five seats.

However, the party later faced political embarrassment during the 2023 mayoral elections amid allegations of cross-voting, exposing internal divisions within its ranks.

With rebel leaders now openly challenging official candidates, the BJP faces a tougher electoral test this time, while Congress hopes to capitalise on the growing dissent.

As campaigning intensifies, Dharamsala’s civic elections are no longer being viewed as routine municipal polls but as a significant political battle that could influence future political equations in the region.
