Political tensions in Himachal Pradesh escalated on Friday as Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur launched a strong critique of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, questioning the effectiveness of the government’s much-publicized “system change” narrative.

Speaking to the media during his visit to Kangra, Thakur said that despite repeated claims by the Congress-led government, there has been little visible improvement on the ground. He alleged that the state is witnessing a rise in corruption cases and administrative inefficiencies, creating a clear disconnect between government promises and public experience.

Thakur was in the district to attend a family function but used the opportunity to highlight what he described as “serious governance failures.” He pointed specifically to the condition of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, raising concerns about the state of healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh.

According to Thakur, key medical facilities — including the cardiology OPD — are reportedly non-functional due to a shortage of specialist doctors. This, he claimed, is forcing patients, especially the elderly and critically ill, to return home without receiving treatment.

Taking aim at the government’s spending priorities, the former Chief Minister said that while crores of rupees are being invested in advanced medical infrastructure such as cath labs, the absence of qualified doctors is rendering these facilities ineffective. He warned that such gaps not only waste public funds but also put patient lives at risk.

In a more serious allegation, Thakur referred to a reported Rs 1.13 crore water supply scam in Theog, claiming that vigilance authorities have filed a chargesheet against officials and contractors. He alleged that fake billing practices were used, including the use of scooter and car registration numbers instead of water tankers, pointing to major irregularities in the system.

He further claimed that contaminated water had been supplied to villages under the scheme, raising concerns over public health and safety.

Highlighting growing public dissatisfaction, Thakur said that people across the state are increasingly frustrated with the government’s performance. He warned that this anger could reflect strongly in the upcoming local body and Panchayati Raj elections.

As political rhetoric intensifies, the coming months are likely to witness sharper confrontations between the ruling government and the opposition, with governance and accountability emerging as key election issues.
