As political activity intensifies in Himachal Pradesh ahead of the upcoming urban local body elections on May 17, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a full-scale statewide campaign targeting the ruling Congress government.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of the party’s State Core Group, chaired by BJP state president Rajeev Bindal. The meeting brought together several senior leaders, including Shrikant Sharma, Sanjay Tandon, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, and Members of Parliament Suresh Kashyap and Sikander Kumar.
Focus on Grassroots Strategy
Sources from the meeting revealed that BJP is focusing heavily on strengthening its booth-level presence and expanding outreach programs across urban regions. The party aims to convert what it describes as “growing public dissatisfaction” into electoral momentum through protests, campaigns, and direct voter engagement.
Party insiders suggest that this strategy is not just about campaigning but also about building a narrative that questions the governance record of the Congress government over the past three years.
Sharp Political Attack on Congress
During the discussions, Shrikant Sharma launched a strong critique of the ruling party, alleging that it has “lost public trust” and is surviving on “false promises.” He expressed confidence that voters are ready for a change and said BJP workers are fully prepared for the upcoming electoral battle.
Echoing similar sentiments, Sanjay Tandon highlighted BJP’s disciplined organizational structure as a key strength. Meanwhile, Jai Ram Thakur claimed that the Congress government has failed on multiple fronts and is increasingly isolated politically.
Elections as a ‘Referendum on Governance’
State president Rajeev Bindal emphasized that the party will systematically expose the alleged shortcomings of the government. He framed the upcoming elections as a “referendum on governance,” signaling BJP’s intent to make performance and accountability central campaign themes.
With less than a month remaining for polling, the political temperature in Himachal Pradesh is clearly rising. Both parties are expected to intensify their campaigns in the coming days, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral contest.
