In a significant political development, the State Election Commission has announced that elections for 51 urban local bodies (ULBs) across Himachal Pradesh will be conducted in a single phase on May 17, 2026. The announcement has immediately brought the Model Code of Conduct into effect, setting the stage for a crucial civic electoral exercise.
State Election Commissioner Anil Khachi confirmed that the elections will cover four key Municipal Corporations — Solan, Mandi, Dharamsala, and Palampur — along with 25 Nagar Parishads and 22 Nagar Panchayats.
A total of 449 wards will go to polls, with approximately 3,60,859 registered voters expected to cast their votes. This includes 1,80,963 male voters, 1,79,882 female voters, and 14 voters from other categories, reflecting a balanced voter demographic.
Interestingly, the election will also see the participation of 1,808 first-time voters, signaling growing youth engagement in local governance. Among them, 961 are men and 847 are women.
Counting Schedule Announced
The counting of votes for Nagar Parishads and Nagar Panchayats will take place on the same day, May 17, immediately after polling concludes. However, the results for the four Municipal Corporations will be declared later, with counting scheduled for May 31, 2026.
Strict Guidelines and Voter Rules
The Election Commission has issued strict instructions to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections. Security agencies, including the police, have been directed to maintain law and order throughout the polling process.
Voters are allowed to carry any one of 16 approved identity documents for verification, including:
- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
- Driving Licence
- Voter ID Card
- Ration Card
In a strong warning, the Commission stated that having voter registration in both rural and urban areas will be treated as an electoral offence, urging citizens to comply with electoral norms.
Party vs Non-Party Elections
While elections for Nagar Parishads and Nagar Panchayats will be conducted on a non-party basis, the Municipal Corporation elections will be fought on party symbols, adding a competitive political dimension to the larger urban centers.
What’s Next?
The State Election Commission also hinted that the schedule for Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections will be announced soon. With a court deadline mandating completion by May 31, the announcement is expected in the coming days.
Why This Election Matters
These elections are crucial as they directly impact urban governance, infrastructure development, and civic services in Himachal Pradesh. With over 3.6 lakh voters, the outcome will shape the administrative direction of key urban regions for the coming years.
