In a major push towards strengthening road infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a new double-lane bridge in Una district.
The upcoming bridge will connect Ghaluwal to Jhalera across the Swan river, providing a much-needed upgrade to the region’s transport network. Notably, it will be constructed alongside the existing narrow bridge built in 1962, when Una was still part of Punjab. Over the years, the old structure has struggled to cope with rising traffic and was further weakened during last year’s monsoon floods.
Spanning 292.5 metres, the new bridge is part of the ambitious Amritsar-Bhota NH-503A project and comes with an estimated cost of ₹37 crore. Once completed, it will significantly improve connectivity between the Una and Haroli Assembly segments, easing daily commutes for thousands of residents.
Speaking at the event, Agnihotri highlighted that the project is crucial for public safety and smoother traffic flow. “The existing bridge had limitations and increasing traffic pressure. This new structure will ensure safer and more efficient movement,” he said.
The development is part of a broader infrastructure push in the region. Another major project under the same highway plan is the proposed ₹1,000 crore Lathiani-Mandli bridge over the Gobind Sagar reservoir of the Bhakra Dam. Once completed, it is expected to reduce the distance between Una and Hamirpur by nearly 20 kilometres, bringing significant relief to commuters.
In addition, the state government is investing ₹132 crore to fix missing road connectivity links in the Haroli segment, especially those disrupted during the monsoon season. Several bridges over tributaries of the Swan river are currently at various stages of construction.
These include infrastructure works in Chandpur, Ispur, Gondpur Jaichand, Haroli, Badhera, Kangar, and Palakwah villages. Meanwhile, construction is also underway on a major ₹52 crore bridge connecting Pandoga in Haroli with Teuri in the Kutlehar segment.
With these projects, Himachal Pradesh aims to enhance regional connectivity, boost economic activity, and ensure safer travel for its residents—especially in areas prone to seasonal disruptions.
