In a significant development amid rising tensions in West Asia, Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that Israeli forces will continue holding their positions in southern Lebanon during the ongoing 10-day ceasefire.
Speaking in a video statement on Thursday, Netanyahu emphasized that the move is essential to ensure border security and prevent potential threats. He stated that Israeli troops would remain stationed within a 10-kilometre security zone, aimed at stopping infiltration attempts and anti-tank missile attacks targeting Israeli communities.
“We are not leaving,” Netanyahu asserted firmly, underlining that the current military deployment is stronger, more extensive, and more secure than previous arrangements.
Stronger Security Zone in Focus
According to Netanyahu, the expanded security zone represents a more solid and continuous defensive strategy, reflecting Israel’s firm stance on safeguarding its borders.
He also highlighted that while the ceasefire is in place, Israel remains committed to long-term security and stability, even as diplomatic discussions continue.
US Pushes for Historic Talks
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has expressed optimism about a potential breakthrough between Israel and Lebanon. Calling the situation “very exciting,” Trump hinted at a historic meeting between the two nations, possibly at the White House.
“We’re going to have a meeting — first time in 44 years,” Trump said, signaling what could be a major diplomatic milestone in the region.
Trump also revealed that he had recently spoken with both Netanyahu and Joseph Aoun, expressing confidence that the ceasefire could pave the way for a broader agreement.
Key Demands and Challenges
Netanyahu outlined Israel’s priorities in the negotiations, stressing two main demands:
- Disarmament of Hezbollah
- A sustainable and long-term peace agreement
Despite optimism, challenges remain, particularly regarding Hezbollah’s role in the region. However, Trump indicated that Lebanon may take steps to address the issue as part of the peace process.
A Critical Moment for West Asia
The ceasefire comes at a crucial time, following heightened volatility along the Israel-Lebanon border. While the 10-day pause offers temporary relief, global attention is now focused on whether it can evolve into a lasting peace agreement.
With diplomatic momentum building and high-level talks expected in the coming weeks, the situation remains fluid—but potentially transformative for the region.
