In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming local body elections, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced that the Congress party will not contest the panchayat elections on party lines.

Speaking during a meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee on Friday, Sukhu clarified that the elections would remain open for all candidates, regardless of party affiliation. “We will not contest the elections on party lines. Everyone is free to contest the poll,” he stated, reinforcing the party’s stance on maintaining the non-partisan nature of grassroots democracy.

Traditionally, panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh are not conducted on party symbols. However, political parties often play an indirect role, especially in influential bodies like Zila Parishads. This time, the Congress leadership appears determined to distance itself completely—even from indirect involvement. A senior party functionary confirmed that the party would not officially support or associate with candidates, including those contesting Zila Parishad elections.

The elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions are expected to take place next month, making this announcement crucial in shaping the political landscape at the grassroots level.

Alongside this, the Congress party also held its first state executive committee meeting, focusing on strengthening its organizational structure. Leaders emphasized the urgent need to form executive committees at district and block levels to prepare for both panchayat and upcoming urban local body elections.

State Congress President Vinay Kumar assured that these committees would be constituted soon. He stressed that district and block presidents must actively engage at the grassroots level and work towards establishing booth-level committees to enhance the party’s reach and effectiveness.

Meanwhile, addressing internal party speculations, AICC in-charge for Himachal Pradesh, Rajni Patil, dismissed rumors regarding senior leader Anand Sharma’s exit from the party. She acknowledged that while Sharma may have differences on certain issues, he remains committed to the Congress.

“Anand Sharma is a senior and respected leader who has contributed significantly to the party over the years. It is natural for dedicated workers to feel dissatisfied at times, but he will not leave the party,” Patil said, attempting to quell concerns over internal discord.

With panchayat elections approaching, the Congress party’s strategy of staying officially neutral could reshape local political dynamics while also testing its grassroots strength without direct electoral branding.
