In a significant diplomatic engagement, Narendra Modi and Donald Trump held a 40-minute phone conversation on Tuesday, focusing on escalating tensions in West Asia and the urgent need to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.

The discussion comes at a time when global attention is firmly fixed on the region, as rising geopolitical tensions threaten to disrupt one of the world’s most critical energy routes.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi described the conversation as warm and constructive, stating that he received a call “from my friend President Trump.” He emphasized that both nations remain committed to strengthening their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, highlighting continued cooperation across key sectors.

Focus on Global Energy Security

A major highlight of the conversation was the growing concern over the stability of the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow yet vital maritime passage through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply flows.

With recent developments raising fears of potential disruptions, both leaders underscored the importance of keeping this crucial shipping lane open and secure. Any instability in this region could have far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and economic stability.

India, in particular, has a strong stake in the region. A substantial portion of its energy imports passes through this route, making the security of Hormuz a matter of national importance.

India’s Strategic Concerns in West Asia

India relies heavily on energy imports from Gulf nations such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. Nearly 80–85% of these supplies transit through the Strait of Hormuz, underlining the region’s strategic importance for New Delhi.

Beyond energy, India is also closely monitoring the situation due to the presence of a large Indian diaspora in the region, whose safety remains a priority.

Positive Signals from Washington

Reacting to the high-level exchange, Sergio Gor described the call as “very positive and productive,” hinting at the importance Washington places on its partnership with India during uncertain global times.

Strengthening India–US Coordination

The conversation reflects growing alignment between New Delhi and Washington on key international issues. As tensions in West Asia continue to evolve, both countries appear keen to maintain close coordination and diplomatic engagement.

With ongoing efforts to de-escalate the situation, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether stability can be restored in the region — especially around the Strait of Hormuz, a lifeline for global energy supply.
