Woman Assaults Elderly Man Outside Dehra SDM Office; Incident Sparks Outrage on Social Media
Kangra (Himachal Pradesh): A shocking incident was caught on camera outside the Dehra Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office in Kangra district, where a woman allegedly slapped an elderly man and attempted to garland him with shoes in full public view.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman, identified as Asha Devi from Dobha village in Mandi district, also poured oil on the victim, Desh Bandhu, a resident of Banda village in Rakkar tehsil, before being stopped by police and bystanders.
Reports suggest the elderly man had come to the office for a court-related hearing when the woman confronted him without warning. The entire episode was captured on video, which later went viral on social media.
In the footage, Asha Devi is seen grabbing the man by his collar and slapping him repeatedly, while a police officer and others try to intervene. Despite being urged to let go, she continued to resist until she was eventually restrained.
The video has since sparked widespread outrage online. Users condemned the public assault and questioned how such an act could take place in broad daylight.
One commenter wrote, “Whatever the issue, what gives anyone the right to assault an elderly man like this? If the roles were reversed, this would be a national outrage.”
Another demanded immediate action, saying, “The attacker should have been arrested on the spot.”
Preliminary reports indicate that the confrontation may have stemmed from an old land dispute. Sources said the victim had previously filed a complaint with the Kangra Deputy Commissioner, alleging that a local panchayat head fraudulently transferred government land in a woman’s name.
The disputed plot, located in Chameti village, was allegedly registered under “Asha Devi, daughter of Bimla Devi, widow of Ramkrishna of Ramnagar village” — an individual Desh Bandhu claims does not actually exist.
Investigators believe the attack may have been an act of retaliation linked to that complaint. The police have taken Asha Devi into custody and initiated legal proceedings.
