Shimla, June 28:
The monsoon has taken a devastating turn in Himachal Pradesh this year, wreaking havoc from the moment it arrived on June 20. In just one week, rain-related incidents have claimed 31 lives across the state, while public and private property worth crores has been damaged.

According to the latest data released by the State Emergency Operations Centre, between June 20 and June 27, a total of 17 deaths occurred in road accidents alone. Flash floods claimed five lives, four people were swept away by strong currents, two died from falling off slopes, while one death each was reported due to electrocution and snakebite. The highest number of casualties—10—were reported from Kangra district.

In the same period, 66 people sustained injuries, and four remain missing. The deluge has also claimed the lives of 37 livestock animals. Six houses have been completely destroyed, while eight others were partially damaged. Additionally, seven shops, eight cowsheds, and one watermill were washed away or collapsed.

The estimated loss to government infrastructure stands at ₹29.16 crore so far.

Heavy Rain Continues; Orange Alert Issued

Rain continued to lash several parts of the state on Saturday. The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for June 29, warning of heavy rainfall in the region. Flash flood warnings have been issued for Solan and Sirmaur districts over the next 24 hours.

Local authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay away from rivers, streams, and other vulnerable areas, and to exercise extreme caution.
