Shimla, June 20:
Even before the official onset of the monsoon, Himachal Pradesh is already witnessing the impact of intense rainfall. In the early hours of Friday, relentless downpour in the state capital Shimla led to a landslide near the Jutogh Cantonment area, close to the city’s Tutu suburb, disrupting daily life and traffic movement.

The landslide temporarily blocked the road connecting Jutogh Cantt to Hathni Ki Dhar, with debris flowing onto the roadway. A parked vehicle was caught in the slide and was severely damaged. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, providing a sense of relief. Authorities responded swiftly, clearing the debris and restoring normal traffic flow shortly thereafter.

The Meteorological Department had already issued alerts for heavy rainfall across the state, forecasting continued wet conditions through the upcoming week. A yellow and orange alert is in effect until June 26, with particularly heavy rainfall expected on June 22, 23, 25, and 26. People living in hilly and vulnerable areas are advised to remain on high alert, as saturated soil layers increase the risk of sudden landslides.

In the last 24 hours, several parts of the state recorded significant rainfall. Nahan, the district headquarters of Sirmaur, received the highest at 84 mm. Other notable figures include 35 mm in Pandoh, 20 mm in Sarahan, and 19 mm each in Jogindernagar and Paonta Sahib. Shimla received 15 mm of rain. While the rains have brought relief from the heat, they have also raised new concerns over landslides and waterlogging.

According to the weather department, the monsoon is expected to officially arrive in the state soon, which could intensify rainfall in the coming days.
