Shimla, March 26 — The education system in Himachal Pradesh is grappling with a significant shortage of Hindi language teachers, with 16 government high schools across the state lacking dedicated Hindi teachers. This deficiency is affecting hundreds of students, depriving them of proper instruction in one of India’s most widely spoken languages. The issue was brought to light in a written reply by the state government during the ongoing budget session of the Assembly.

Education Minister Rohit Thakur addressed the matter on Tuesday, confirming the absence of Hindi teacher posts in various schools across multiple districts. According to the minister’s reply, these schools, located in different parts of the state, are currently facing a shortage of educators for the Hindi language, which is a critical subject in the state’s curriculum.

Schools Affected by Hindi Teacher Shortage

The shortage of Hindi teachers is particularly acute in the Government High School Naila in Chamba district, where the post has not been created, leaving the students without a qualified Hindi instructor. Similarly, in Baffrin School in Hamirpur district, 47 students are affected due to the absence of a Hindi teacher.

The situation is no better in the Kangra district, where five schools—Ashapuri, Totarani, Nandehar, Kohalla, and Bhadyara—are experiencing the same problem. A total of 371 students in these schools are unable to receive proper Hindi education. Out of these, 115 students are enrolled in Nandedhar School alone.

In Kinnaur district, Nathpa School is facing the same predicament, with eight students unable to study Hindi due to the unavailability of a teacher. Similarly, Moring School in Lahaul Spiti is also grappling with the shortage of Hindi educators.

Three schools in Mandi district—Kolang, Prassat Hawani, and Paplot—are also without Hindi teachers. These schools collectively serve 121 students, who are missing out on the crucial language instruction.

The problem extends to Shimla district as well, where three schools—Thanedhar, Koot, and Jarashi—are without Hindi teachers, affecting a total of 50 students. In Solan district, Kumarhatti School is similarly impacted, with 70 students left without proper Hindi instruction.

Impact on Students and the Community

The lack of Hindi teachers in these schools has left hundreds of students in a lurch, hindering their ability to fully engage with their academic curriculum. Hindi, being a core subject, is an essential part of the syllabus for students in Himachal Pradesh. Without proper instruction, students are missing out on a fundamental component of their education.

The absence of Hindi teachers has sparked concern among parents and local communities, who are calling for urgent action from the state government. Many parents have expressed their frustration, pointing out that the lack of teachers in such a vital subject will affect their children’s educational growth and future prospects.

Government’s Response and Challenges

The state government, while acknowledging the issue, has not provided a timeline for the creation of the vacant Hindi teacher posts. Education Minister Rohit Thakur assured that efforts are underway to address the shortage, but no immediate solutions have been proposed. The issue reflects broader challenges in the education system, including staffing shortages and resource allocation.

With the new academic year approaching, there is mounting pressure on the state government to resolve the crisis and ensure that students in these 16 affected schools receive proper Hindi education. Educators and policymakers alike are urging the government to expedite the creation of these posts and to prioritize staffing in these critical areas to ensure no student is left behind.

As the situation unfolds, the government’s ability to respond swiftly to the demands for qualified Hindi teachers will be crucial in maintaining the quality of education in Himachal Pradesh’s public schools.
