At 92, Former DGP Ratti Ram Verma Wins Hearts with His Energy and Spirit

This year’s district-level Independence Day celebrations at Shimla’s historic Ridge left behind a truly unforgettable moment. While the parade, flag hoisting, and cultural performances drew attention, it was 92-year-old former Director General of Police (DGP) Ratti Ram Verma who became the star attraction when he broke into a lively nati dance.

As Himachali folk tunes filled the air, Verma, seated among the audience, couldn’t resist. He rose, joined the performers, and matched their steps with confidence and flair. His spirited moves and cheerful energy mesmerized the crowd, drawing thunderous applause. Within hours, the video of him dancing went viral on social media.

The event, presided over by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, featured a parade inspection followed by colorful performances. But when Verma joined the nati at his age, ministers, officials, and spectators alike were left astonished. Many remarked that age is no barrier—when the heart is young and filled with patriotism, one remains forever youthful.

Despite his years, Ratti Ram Verma continues to lead an active life. A familiar figure on Shimla’s Mall Road, he enjoys his daily walks and often spends time at the Indian Coffee House with friends and acquaintances. A few years ago, he even participated in a 3-kilometer mini-marathon organized to raise awareness against drug abuse, famously calling drugs a “sweet poison” that ruins lives. His message to the youth: stay away from addiction, focus on education and sports.

Originally from Theog, Verma is remembered as one of Himachal’s most upright and dedicated police officers. During the 1990s, under Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, he served as the state’s DGP and was considered one of Singh’s most trusted officers. Later, he also chaired the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission. In 2011, he was honored with the Policeman of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Award. His name still symbolizes integrity, discipline, and professionalism in the police force.

Even after retirement, Verma’s commitment to society remains unwavering. In 2023, when Himachal was devastated by a severe monsoon disaster, he pledged to contribute ₹10,000 every month from his pension to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for an entire year—a promise he fulfilled. His gesture reaffirmed that true service to society transcends age and position.

Verma’s family has a distinguished legacy of public service. His daughter, Tilotma Verma, a 1990-batch IPS officer, is currently serving as Director General of Police (DG) in Uttar Pradesh. His other daughter also serves as an officer. His son, Rakesh Verma, was once an MLA from Theog, but his untimely passing in May 2020 was a deep personal loss for the family. Even through grief, Verma remained resilient, immersing himself in social work and public service.

His philosophy is simple—discipline, exercise, social connection, and a balanced outlook are the secrets to a long, active life. At 92, Ratti Ram Verma embodies exactly that.
