Mandi, August 15

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has criticized the state government, calling its decisions to shift and close institutions a clear reflection of a narrow mindset. He raised strong objections to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s recent announcement to shift Atal Medical University from Nerchowk to Sarkaghat.

Thakur said that during its tenure, the present government has either shut down institutions or altered them for political gains. The decision to relocate Atal Medical University, he added, is another such example.

He pointed out that the government has already changed its stand on the university three times. Initially, it was to remain in Nerchowk, then there was an attempt to move it to Sundernagar, but land issues arose. Later, Mandi was considered, and at one stage even land in Hamirpur was explored.

“Now the university is being shifted to Sarkaghat. What is the need to repeatedly relocate an institution that is already functioning in one place? This reflects the government’s instability,” Thakur remarked.

He further said that instead of shifting institutions, it would have been better if the Chief Minister had announced new projects for Sarkaghat. “That way, people would have expressed their gratitude. But it seems that changing or closing institutions has become the sole objective of this government’s every program,” he added.
