12 Objects, Including Fork, Knife, Needle, Pencil, Found in Patient’s Stomach in Mandi
12 things including fork, knife, needle, pencil removed from stomach
Mandi, February 28: In a shocking and bizarre incident, doctors at the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College, Nerchowk, here has removed 12 foreign objects, including a fork, knife, needle and pencil, from the stomach of a 27-year-old patient. Doctors were astonished by what they found in surgery when the young man came in early Thursday morning complaining of severe stomach pain.
The patient, a resident of Kathlag, was admitted to the hospital complaining of severe pain in the stomach around 5 am. Early tests, including X-rays, showed an astonishing number of foreign objects stuck in his stomach. These objects included pointed objects like a knife and fork, as well as a pencil and a needle, which likely caused the severe pain that led the patient to the hospital.
When the foreign bodies were discovered, the medical team quickly opted for surgery. During the procedure, which took about three hours, doctors delicately removed the 12 objects from the patient’s stomach. Not only was the amount of objects inside the man’s body shocking to doctors but the fact that he was still alive was unusual given how potentially harmful the ingested items were.
The Patient’s Mental Health History
The young man, who was suffering from schizophrenia, is a serious mental illness, according to his family. After his father died in 2006, he has been living with his mother and brother, his family said. After completing his Plus Two, he was sent for coaching at Chandigarh but when he spent a year there, his mental health took a toll. He has now been called home, where he has remained almost mute and withdrawn.
Doctors said people who have schizophrenia sometimes display strange and dangerous behavior, including swallowing objects that are not digestible. This causes the patients to be unaware of their performance and possibly consume toxic substances without knowing the consequences. The young man’s case is an extreme, and tragic, example of how schizophrenia can express itself in life-threatening ways.
A Rare but Not Unknown Event
The case in Mandi is not entirely an outlier. Earlier in 2019, a similar case was reported at the same medical college when doctors found a mentally ill patient had swallowed several strange objects, including seven steel spoons, a plastic spoon, two screwdrivers, a knife, two toothbrushes, and an iron rod. Behavior like that is often driven by severe mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, and this case highlighted the deadly consequences.
Doctors at Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College continue to keep a close watch on the ailing 24-year-old man. Mental health experts are also consulting on how best to treat his schizophrenia, which still is a major concern due to his bad condition.
Ongoing Medical Observation
The patient is now being monitored continuously by medics as he recovers from the surgery. Though as harrowing as the act may have been, doctors are confident the 19-year-old will make a full physical recovery with treatment. The psychological ramifications of his condition will need to be managed over a lifetime.
It also highlights the need for compassionate care and oversight in dealing with those struggling with mental illness. The Mandi doctors also maintain ongoing reminders about the importance of mental health, emphasizing how it can affect physical health.
