Leaders from both the ruling Congress party and the Opposition BJP have come together to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for wearing a traditional Himachali cap, known as the Kulluvi cap, during his recent meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. This symbolic gesture has garnered admiration not only from political figures but also from netizens who celebrated the moment on social media with hashtags such as #HimachaliCap, #ProudMoment, and #ModiFrance.

Vikramaditya Singh, a Congress leader and Himachal’s PWD & Urban Development Minister, expressed his pride on Facebook, sharing a picture of PM Modi wearing the Himachali cap alongside Macron. Singh acknowledged that while political differences remain, seeing the Prime Minister don the Kulluvi cap made Himachalis feel a deep sense of pride. He also hoped for the central government’s assistance in the wake of financial losses due to recent disasters in the state.

BJP’s Dharamsala MLA, Sudhir Sharma, also took to social media, sharing images of PM Modi wearing the cap during his France visit. He highlighted that the Himachali cap on the global stage not only showcased India’s rich heritage but also served as a proud moment for the people of Himachal Pradesh. Sharma further emphasized that this gesture represented Himachal’s identity on an international platform.

Netizens, like Naveen Sharma, also expressed their appreciation for the gesture, noting that this wasn’t the first time PM Modi had embraced Himachal’s cultural pride by wearing the Kulluvi cap. It was seen as a powerful representation of Himachali tradition and an acknowledgment of the state’s cultural significance.

The Kulluvi cap also made a notable appearance during the inaugural ceremony of the ongoing 9th Asian Winter Games 2025 in Harbin, China. Indian athletes, coaches, and officials proudly wore the caps as part of the official attire, displaying the state’s traditional attire on an international stage.

A distinctive feature of the Kulluvi cap is its round shape with a flat top, adorned with a colorful embroidered band showcasing intricate patterns. The cap’s back, typically crafted from woolen yarn, is often handmade in various regions of Himachal Pradesh. The traditional cap has deep roots in Kinnaur and has spread to other parts of the state through princely states like Bushahr and Kullu, with different regions incorporating unique weaving styles and materials.
