Shimla, (Himachal Pradesh) [India], January 14 (Diary Times): Himachal Pradesh is currently experiencing an intense cold wave, with temperatures dipping below freezing point in nine locations as of Sunday night. Regions such as Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul-Spiti are bearing the brunt of the chill, where the freezing conditions have led to hazardous icy roads. This has significantly raised the risk of accidents and caused disruptions to travel across these areas.

The Atal Tunnel Rohtang, which was closed for three days due to heavy snowfall and black ice, has now reopened for vehicular movement. Tourists have been eager to visit the North and South Portals of the tunnel, as well as the nearby Dhundhi area, to witness the breathtaking snow-covered landscapes. Solangnala also saw an influx of visitors enjoying the winter beauty. However, the ongoing snowfall has rendered Jalori Pass, a crucial route for 64 panchayats in Kullu, still inaccessible.

Dense fog continues to disrupt daily life in several districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur, severely reducing visibility. The ongoing foggy conditions have raised safety concerns, especially for travelers. In response, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for these areas on January 14 and 15, cautioning residents and commuters about the increased risks associated with the dense fog.

The weather in Himachal Pradesh is expected to stay clear until January 15, with daytime temperatures forecasted to rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. However, the nights will bring a further dip in temperatures, dropping by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, which is likely to intensify the ongoing cold wave across the region.

A new western disturbance is expected to impact Himachal Pradesh starting the night of January 15, bringing rain and snowfall to the middle and high-altitude regions. Areas including Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti will experience snowfall between January 16 and 19. Meanwhile, the plains of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kangra are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall during this time, adding to the winter chill across the state.
