Mandi, (Himachal Pradesh) [India], January 11 (Diary Times): A team of students from IIT Mandi has developed an innovative auscultation model that allows trainee doctors to hear the specific sounds associated with a disease they wish to study, directly through a stethoscope. This groundbreaking model was created by students Vinamra, Naresh Meena, Sonu Kumar Meena, Tarun, Rizwana, and Abhigyan, all under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Gajendra Singh.

Dr. Gajendra Singh explained that diseases are typically diagnosed by listening to the unique sounds of heartbeats through a stethoscope. Each disease produces a distinct sound, and these sounds can be heard in various parts of the body. During their training, doctors learn to recognize these sounds using auscultation instruments. However, the model developed by his team takes this a step further by integrating an app, enhancing the learning experience for aspiring medical professionals.

Once the disease is selected on the app and the stethoscope is placed on the patient’s body, the user will hear only the specific sound associated with that condition. If the stethoscope is moved to another part of the body, no sound will be heard, making the learning process more focused. This innovative approach will greatly assist trainee doctors in honing their ability to accurately identify and distinguish different heart and body sounds, enhancing their diagnostic skills.

Dr. Gajendra Singh acknowledged the significant contribution of Dr. Bhupendra Patel, a physiologist at AIIMS Bilaspur, in providing the heartbeats’ sounds. His assistance was crucial in recording these unique sounds, which were then incorporated into the auscultation model. This collaboration has been instrumental in making the project a reality, allowing the sounds to be accurately reproduced for educational purposes.

Dr. Gajendra Singh highlighted the cost-effectiveness of the auscultation model developed by his team, noting that similar equipment from other companies typically costs anywhere from several lakhs to crores. In contrast, their model was initially created for just ₹30,000. Once fully refined and launched in the market, the price is expected to range between ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh, making it an affordable and innovative solution for medical training.
