Severe Cold in Himachal Pradesh; Snowfall and Thunderstorms Expected from January 4-7
Cold Conditions and Weather Alerts in the State as New Year Begins
Shimla, January 2: Himachal Pradesh is experiencing severe cold as temperatures in high-altitude areas continue to plummet below freezing, while lower-lying areas struggle with dense fog. The Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms, rain, and snowfall from January 4 to January 7, with the possibility of the first snowfall of the year in the hilly regions.
Lahaul-Spiti Registers Coldest Temperatures
The cold wave continues to grip the upper regions of the state, with Lahaul-Spiti recording the lowest temperatures. Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti remained the coldest at -14.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Samdho at -9.3°C, Kukumseri at -6.9°C, Keylong at -6.2°C, and Kalpa in Kinnaur at -2°C.
Meanwhile, the capital Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 9.6°C, which is 6.5°C above the normal for this time of year. Interestingly, Shimla’s nights are now warmer than the plains, surprising locals and visitors alike.
Dense Fog Reduces Visibility in the Plains
While sunshine briefly appeared between the clouds in several parts of the state, the plains were heavily affected by dense fog, especially in Bilaspur, where visibility was reduced to just 50 meters. Drivers in the area faced significant difficulties due to the poor visibility. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for dense fog in the districts of Bilaspur, Una, Kangra, Mandi, and Solan over the next 24 hours.
