Amidst National Mourning, a few stalls with local cuisines and a handloom firm still open

Kartik Sharma (Shimla): The sad demise of ex-prime minister Manmohan Singh, had a mixed emotion for the tourists in Shimla. A few who could relate to the demise, felt the national mourning and the rest could see their new year, not spent so well.

The sales of the stalls somehow impacted a few, whereas a few remained satisfied with the current response, post closure of the winter carnival 2024-25.

Mostly the stalls on the mall road were closed, whereas the stalls below the Mall road along with Gaindamul remained open and one of the owners of a stall Kanta said that she didn’t have any big impact upon the sales. She was selling Himachali Cuisine such as Bathu ki Kheer and much more. She added that it’s not affected so much as the tourists are still seen roaming, and that she is still having good sales.

The handloom business is open to keep the tourists warm.

One of the 40 weavers on the team claimed in an interview with the Diary Times that the Manu Weavers did affect sales. They have been allotted the Gaiety theatre for displaying their products for the sale, which had an impact on the sale, when the winter carnival under the training of Master Bhag Chand, with a big experience of 30 years, including a 4-5 years experience of his internship.

Bhag told that they have their own ‘Khaddis’ , the site/ equipment used to weave the clothes where they weave their apparels. These range from shawls to socks, and that he was thankful for the government to providing that space for free to exhibit their apparels and to better their livelihood.

After speaking with Bhag, he provided a succinct overview of the product range on display.

It included the following product line: Himachali Topies, Shawls, Warm and Trippy Lowers, Khadi jackets, Warm Socks, Caps and Sadris for your little ones.

The Price ranged from a mere 1300 Shawl to even a highly priced 22,000 Shawl.

Despite a mixed initial impact on sales, with some vendors opting to close their stalls early, others remain optimistic and continue offering their winter treats.

With the rescheduled Winter Festival commencing from January 2nd to 8th, stall owners anticipate a significant resurgence in business.

The return of crowds for the highly anticipated star nights, featuring Satinder Sartaj and other performers, is expected to boost sales and provide a much-needed positive conclusion to the festival season.

Open Stalls Have a Varying Effect on Sales
A few vendors serving regional cuisine and a handloom company remain open throughout the National Mourning.

Tourists in Shimla felt conflicted by the tragic death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Some who could identify with the death experienced national sadness, while others saw their new year as one that was not very pleasant. Some were impacted in some way by the stall sales, while others were content with the present response following the winter funfair 2024–2025 shutdown.

The owner said that she had little effect on sales because the stalls below the mall road and Gaindamul remained open while the majority of the stalls on the mall road were shuttered.
