BJP Criticizes Congress for Favoring Manmohan Singh Memorial While Ignoring Narasimha Rao’s Legacy
Accusations of Bias Against Non-Gandhi Leaders Surface Amid Memorial Debate
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp critique of the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting the legacy of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao while pushing for a memorial dedicated to Manmohan Singh. BJP leader Sudhir Sharma questioned Congress’s selective reverence for its leaders, particularly those who are not affiliated with the Gandhi family, and highlighted what he sees as the party’s bias.
Sharma pointed out the lack of respect shown to Rao after his passing in December 2004. Despite his pivotal role as a Congress Prime Minister, Rao’s body was not allowed to lie in state at Congress Bhawan in Delhi, and his final rites were performed in South India. “Narasimha Rao, a key figure in India’s economic transformation, was denied the respect he deserved. Even today, there is no memorial for him in Delhi,” Sharma said.
The BJP leader also raised questions about why the Congress government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh failed to establish a memorial for Rao, despite his groundbreaking contributions to India’s economic reforms. While Congress is now calling for a memorial for Singh, which has been approved by the BJP-led central government, Sharma queried why Rao, who served as Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996 and is credited with opening India’s economy, was overlooked.
Rao’s legacy, often overshadowed within Congress, is a focal point for many critics, with some arguing that his efforts were underappreciated by the very party he led. Sharma further criticized Congress for its historical tendency to downplay the significance of non-Gandhi leaders. “The way Rahul Gandhi publicly disrespected Manmohan Singh by tearing up an ordinance during his tenure is an example of the party’s disregard for its leaders,” he added.

This ongoing debate over memorials has reignited questions about how Congress treats its leaders’ legacies, particularly those not linked to the Gandhi family. As Congress works to reinforce its narrative of valuing its past leaders, the BJP’s criticism serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions over how historical figures are honored in Indian politics.
