Shimla: As Christmas approaches, Himachal Pradesh’s popular tourist destinations are experiencing a surge in visitors, with hotels seeing impressive occupancy rates across the state. Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kufri, Narkanda, Kasauli, and Chail have all witnessed an influx of tourists, eager to enjoy the scenic beauty and anticipation of snowfall.

Over the weekend, Shimla reported a 70-80% occupancy rate in its hotels, while Dharamshala saw 60% and Kasauli experienced a near-full 90% occupancy. Tourists from all corners of the country are flocking to these hill stations to escape the plains in hopes of witnessing a white Christmas.

Crowds and Traffic Jams in Popular Tourist Destinations

Shimla’s Ridge Maidan and Mall Road were teeming with tourists who enjoyed sightseeing well into the evening. Kufri and Narkanda, known for their breathtaking landscapes, also drew large crowds. However, the heavy tourist traffic led to congestion, especially along Shimla’s Circular Road, where both locals and tourists found themselves stuck in jams.

Kasauli, another popular spot, faced similar challenges with traffic snarls due to the large number of visitors. Despite the challenges, the festive spirit is high, and many visitors are making the most of their time in the hill stations.

Expectations of a Record-Breaking Holiday Season

This year, the tourism sector is anticipating an unprecedented influx of visitors for the Christmas and New Year celebrations. According to tourism experts, advanced bookings for hotel rooms are already up, with special holiday packages being offered by both the Himachal Tourism Development Corporation and private hotels.

Gajendra Singh Thakur, President of the Federation of Himachal Hotel and Restaurant Association, stated that the tourist influx has been particularly noticeable over the weekends in Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, and other hill stations. He confirmed that some hotels are already seeing advanced bookings for next weekend as well, signaling a strong demand for accommodation in the coming weeks.

Manali Sees Record Number of Visitors

Manali, one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the state, saw more than 3,500 tourist vehicles arriving over the weekend. In addition to the personal vehicles, over 100 Volvo buses and Tempo Travellers brought tourists to this popular hill station for sightseeing. The occupancy of hotels in Manali has reached 70%, and experts predict that the crowds will only grow during the Christmas and New Year period. According to data from the Green Tax Barrier, the number of tourist vehicles visiting Manali this weekend exceeded that of the previous week, which had recorded about 3,000 vehicles.

With snow on the horizon, tourism officials are bracing for even larger crowds in the coming weeks as travelers continue to flock to Himachal Pradesh to enjoy the winter magic of the mountains.
