A Fierce Criticism of Governance and Leadership
In a strong condemnation of the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur demanded a public apology from Rajeev Shukla, Congress in-charge, for his controversial remarks. Thakur also called for the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, citing a series of governance failures that have left critical issues unresolved and the state in turmoil. His remarks, made during a press conference in Shimla on Tuesday, highlighted what he termed as the “mismanagement” and “arrogance” displayed by the ruling party.
Misuse of Public Funds: A Question of Priorities
Thakur launched a sharp critique of the Congress government for its handling of public resources, focusing specifically on the extravagant spending surrounding the government’s two-year anniversary celebrations. “The government spent over ₹25 crore to celebrate its second anniversary, yet failed to present a single tangible achievement. This wasteful celebration only showcases the government’s failures, not its successes,” Thakur said, questioning the priority given to celebrations rather than addressing the state’s pressing concerns.
The Call for Accountability: Rajeev Shukla’s Remarks and the Deputy CM’s Failure
Thakur’s strongest remarks were aimed at Rajeev Shukla for making what he referred to as “abusive language” during public statements. “Such behavior from a senior leader like Shukla cannot be tolerated. He must issue a public apology for his remarks,” Thakur asserted, accusing the Congress party of lowering the standards of political discourse in the state.
He also pointed to the failure of Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri to address key issues affecting the state, particularly the HRTC retirees’ protests. “While the Deputy CM celebrated from the stage, he failed to acknowledge the plight of retired HRTC employees who have been waiting for their pensions. If he has any sense of responsibility, he should step down,” Thakur added, highlighting how the government’s inaction has resulted in continued protests.
Targeting Journalists and Suppressing Dissent
Thakur expressed concern over the growing trend of suppressing dissent in Himachal Pradesh under the current Congress government. He accused the ruling party of using threats against journalists and government officials who voice their criticism. “The Congress government seems more focused on silencing its critics than addressing the state’s issues. The practice of issuing threats from public platforms is an alarming trend,” Thakur remarked, further emphasizing that the government’s actions were an attempt to stifle independent voices and free expression.
Media Manipulation and Internal Discontent within Congress
Continuing his attack, Thakur also pointed out the government’s tendency to manipulate media narratives rather than focusing on effective governance. “Instead of addressing real issues, the Congress government seeks undue praise from the media. They need to stop blaming journalists for their failures and focus on real solutions,” Thakur added.
Furthermore, he raised concerns about the deep factionalism within the Congress party. Thakur observed that internal rifts among Congress leaders have become increasingly visible. “The infighting within the Congress is evident. Leaders are more focused on outshining each other than governing effectively. At a recent public event, the state president was even interrupted mid-speech, exposing the cracks within the party,” he pointed out, adding that these internal struggles were distracting the government from fulfilling its duties.
Allegations of Scams and Lack of Transparency
Thakur also questioned the Congress government’s handling of corruption allegations, particularly in the liquor, mining, and solar projects. “Instead of making baseless accusations against the opposition, the government should investigate these alleged scams. If they have nothing to hide, they should take action and hold those responsible accountable,” Thakur asserted, demanding transparency and accountability from the ruling party.
A Demand for Answers and Accountability
In conclusion, Thakur reiterated his call for the Congress government to take responsibility for its actions. “The government cannot escape the allegations. It must provide answers to the public and ensure that justice is served,” he emphasized, reinforcing the opposition’s demand for greater accountability from the ruling party.
Through his strong words and unwavering stance, Jairam Thakur made it clear that the Leader of Opposition would continue to hold the Congress government accountable, pushing for answers to unresolved issues and demanding changes in governance practices.
