Understanding the Hindu Calendar: Tithi, Nakshatra, Vaar, Yoga, and Karan

In Hindu time calculation, the Tithi refers to the time it takes for the Moon to travel 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. A month consists of thirty Tithis, divided into two halves: Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase) and Krishna Paksha (the waning phase). The last day of Shukla Paksha is called Purnima (Full Moon), while the last day of Krishna Paksha is Amavasya (New Moon). The names of the Tithis are: Pratipada, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi, Chaturdashi, and Amavasya/Purnima.

A Nakshatra is a group of stars in the sky, and there are 27 Nakshatras in total, each governed by one of the nine planets. The 27 constellations are: Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Poorvaphalguni, Uttaraphalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Moola, Poorvashada, Uttarashada, Shravan, Dhanistha, Shatabhisha, Poorvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada, and Revati.

The Vaar refers to the days of the week, which are named after the planets: Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn), and Sunday (Sun).

Yoga is a combination of specific distances between the Sun and the Moon, resulting in 27 different types of yogas. Some of the notable yogas include Vishkumbh, Preeti, Ayushman, Saubhagya, Shobhan, Atigand, Sukarma, Dhriti, Shul, Gand, Vriddhi, Dhruva, Vyaghat, Harshan, Vajra, Siddhi, Vyatipat, Variyaan, Parigh, Shiva, Siddha, Sadhya, Shubh, Shukla, Brahma, Indra, and Vaidhriti.

A Karan is half of a Tithi, with one Karan occurring in the first half and the other in the latter half of the day. There are 11 Karanas in total: Bav, Balav, Kaulav, Taitil, Gar, Vanij, Vishti, Shakuni, Chatushpada, Nag, and Kistughna. Vishti Karan, also called Bhadra, is considered inauspicious for beginning new ventures or performing important tasks.

Together, these components form the basis of the Vedic Panchang, helping Hindus track the auspicious and inauspicious times throughout the lunar calendar.
