Shimla, September 17: In a massive crackdown on illicit drug smuggling, 42 teams of Himachal Pradesh Police simultaneously raided 42 locations in five districts, the state’s biggest ever coordinated operation. The raids conducted in Kangra, Chamba, Una, Bilaspur and Police District Nurpur were part of a special operation aimed at dismantling large-scale smuggling networks and identifying key operators.

In this unprecedented action, 8 locations in Kangra, 7 in Chamba, 6 in Una, 11 in Bilaspur and 10 in Police District Nurpur were targeted. The teams were led by investigating officers under the guidance of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Northern Zone. Their primary goal was to seize narcotics, collect evidence to disrupt major smuggling operations and trace the properties of those involved in the drug trade.

Seizures and arrests

According to a statement issued from the police headquarters, the operation led to the arrest of 8 persons and 4 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. During the raid, the police seized 5 kg poppy husk and 25 grams of chitta (heroin). Besides, 3 vehicles used for drug smuggling were confiscated, including two four-wheelers (XUV 300 and Alto) and one two-wheeler.

In a separate action, 4 additional cases were registered under the Excise Act, resulting in the seizure of 57 liters of illicit liquor. Besides, the police found that the house of one of the suspects was built on illegally occupied government land. The local administration has been informed for further action.

Focus on rehabilitation

In a progressive move, Himachal Police for the first time launched efforts to rehabilitate persons involved in small-scale drug crimes. About 40 people, whether drug addicts or accused in minor cases of the NDPS Act, were motivated to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment under Section 64, which would give them immunity from prosecution if they comply.

The police headquarters stressed the importance of community participation in tackling drug-related activities and urged people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.

Preventive custody proposals

As part of the ongoing crackdown on habitual offenders, Himachal Police has submitted 8 new proposals for preventive custody under PITN & PS Act in the last 10 days. These proposals will be sent to the State Government for approval with an aim to detain repeat offenders involved in drug trafficking. This is a significant increase compared to the 3 proposals approved earlier.

The success of the massive raids and the increasing focus on preventive measures underline the commitment of Himachal Police to tackle the drug menace in the State. As the operation continues, officials are confident that these actions will deal a serious blow to the illegal drug trade in Himachal Pradesh.
