Shimla, July 22: Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania administered the oath of office and secrecy to three newly elected MLAs of Himachal Pradesh. The oath ceremony was organized in the library premises of Himachal Pradesh Assembly. The MLAs who took oath include Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur, Ashish Sharma and Bawa Hardeep Singh. Congress party’s Kamlesh Thakur and Bawa Hardeep Singh have become MLAs for the first time, while BJP’s Ashish Sharma has been elected MLA for the second time. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, MLAs and many dignitaries were present in the oath taking ceremony.

Chief Minister Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur has won the election from Dehra. Bawa Hardeep Singh from Nalagarh seat and Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur assembly seat became MLAs after winning the election. With this, the maximum number of members in Himachal Assembly has now reached 68. In this, the number of Congress MLAs is 40 and the number of BJP MLAs is 28. There is no independent MLA in the House. Even before the political developments in the state on February 27, the number of Congress MLAs was 40.

Earlier the number of BJP MLAs was 25. In the assembly elections held in 2022, three independent MLAs won the elections and reached the assembly, but all three independent MLAs resigned from their posts on March 22 and took membership of the BJP, which was accepted by the Speaker of the Assembly on June 3. After this, voting took place on July 10 in the three vacant assembly constituencies of Dehra, Nalagarh and Hamirpur, in which Kamlesh Thakur won the election on a Congress ticket from Dehra and Congress candidate Bawa Hardeep Singh from Nalagarh. At the same time, BJP candidate Ashish Sharma won the election on Hamirpur seat and was elected MLA for the second time.

After Kamlesh Thakur took oath, history has been made in the House of Himachal Legislative Assembly. For the first time, a husband and wife pair were seen together in the assembly. This pair will now be seen together in the assembly during the monsoon session.

Earlier, the father-son pair of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his son Vikramaditya Singh have been seen in the House. They were seen together in the House after the 2017 assembly elections.
