Continuously rising prices of garlic have given a big blow to the kitchen budget of homes. Garlic is being sold for up to Rs 500 per kg in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Prices of garlic have increased by Rs 100 per kg in about a week. However, during this period, there has been some relief from the reduced prices of mustard oil, refined and cumin seeds. Traders say that the reason for the skyrocketing price of garlic is due to low production. In the states where garlic is cultivated most, its production has decreased by 30 percent. Last year the garlic crop was completely destroyed in the rains.

Along with this, farmers were facing losses in garlic crop for the last few years, due to which they had reduced the cultivation of garlic. On Sunday, 200 grams of garlic was being sold for Rs 100 in the Lower Bazaar vegetable market of the capital Shimla.

Kajal, who came to buy vegetables, told that she bought garlic worth Rs 50, in which she got only two bunches. Till date I have never bought garlic at such an expensive price.

Presently garlic is coming in the market from Sirmaur, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana. Garlic seller Mansa Ram says that the price is likely to reduce only after the new crop of garlic arrives in the market. Since garlic is expensive, most people leave after asking the price.
