The trajectory of solar power in India has undergone substantial growth since 2017, where it constituted a mere 1 percent of the nation’s power composition. If India successfully realizes its solar objectives outlined in the 14th National Electricity Plan (NEP14), the solar sector’s share is projected to experience a remarkable upswing, escalating from 5 percent to an impressive 25 percent over the financial years 2022-2032. This transformative period signifies a rapid expansion and underscores the increasing prominence of solar energy in India’s power portfolio.
The evolving energy landscape in India indicates a potential paradigm shift in power generation growth. Traditionally dominated by coal-driven mechanisms over the past decade, there is a notable prospect of transitioning towards solar and wind sources in the upcoming decade. This transformative trend hinges on India’s commitment and successful realization of its objectives outlined in the 14th National Electricity Plan (NEP14), as meticulously analyzed by Ember. If these milestones are met, it could herald a significant departure from the historical reliance on coal, signaling a more sustainable and diversified energy future for the country.
