S Jaishankar’s Tough Stance on China: India-China Ties Unlikely to Normalize Anytime Soon

  • Speaking at a recent forum in Hyderabad, India, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar remarked that the ongoing issues between India and China would need to be resolved before any significant progress can be made in bilateral relations. Jaishankar specifically noted that the border standoff between the two nations at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic remains a key obstacle to improved ties between India and China.

  • Additionally, Jaishankar commended Prime Minister Modi’s leadership during the COVID-19 crisis, particularly with regard to the government’s handling of the border standoff with China. According to Jaishankar, Modi made the difficult decision to deploy forces to the high-altitude region despite the significant logistical and health challenges posed by the pandemic. “We were completely preoccupied with the COVID challenge. Please appreciate the anonymity of what Prime Minister Modi did. He deployed forces at this great height in very difficult conditions in the middle of COVID. And then took this challenge head-on,” Jaishankar remarked.

  • Jaishankar also highlighted the global recognition that India has received for its handling of the border standoff with China. According to Jaishankar, the international community has taken note of India’s resolute stance on the issue and its commitment to finding a resolution. “I can tell you the entire world has taken notice of this. They have also noted that since then we have stood firm. We have made it very clear that until there is a resolution to this issue, our relations with China will not be normal,” Jaishankar stated.

  • Furthermore, Jaishankar emphasized that the international community has also recognized India’s resolve and determination in addressing its challenges, including the border standoff with China. “The world takes note of that resolve and determination,” he added.
