He wrote in his post, ‘Congratulations to all those who have been honored with the Padma Award. India values his contribution in various fields. Last year 106 Padma awards were announced
Earlier last year, the President had approved 106 Padma awards, which included 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri. 19 awardees were women. Among the awardees, 19 are women. Seven people have been selected for this honor posthumously. Padma honors are one of the country’s highest civilian honors and are awarded in three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

First know about Padma Awards
The Government of India instituted the country’s two highest civilian honors – Bharat Ratna and Padma awards in the year 1954.
These awards are given to those people from India and abroad who have done some prestigious and extraordinary work in any field, which has an element of public service.
These awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. The winners are then honored by the President at a ceremony in March or April.
Generally, there is no provision for giving these awards posthumously. But in some specific cases the government has full authority to take these decisions.
According to the rules, if someone has been given Padma Shri at present, then he can be given Padma Bhushan or Padma Vibhushan only after five years from now. But here also the award committee can give relaxation in some specific cases.
The names of all winners are published in the Gazette of India on the day after the honors are conferred by the President at the ceremony.

What were the names of the awards earlier?

When the Padma Awards were started in 1954 along with Bharat Ratna, only the name Padma Vibhushan came into existence. Not Padmashree and Padma Bhushan.
Under Padma Vibhushan, the winners were honored with the names of first class, second class and third class.
However, this nomenclature remained in practice only for one year. Then in the notification issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan on 8 January 1955, these awards were named Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
