Ind vs aus 1st test match preview 2023

Arguably the biggest test rivalry in the world at the moment, India and Australia are set to square off in a four-match series, Border Gavaskar Trophy starting February 9. Having turned down the plan to play a few practice games in the subcontinent, Australia is preparing for the test assignment in a unique manner. To counter the Ravichandran Ashwin threat in the test series, Australian batters have reportedly been practising against the off-spinner “who is the duplicate of Ashwin” Maheesh Pithiya, Australian team flying him to Bengaluru by the touring team as a net bowler.

Australia Strategy to beat ashwin

As per reports, Mahessh Pithya has an uncanny resemblance to Ashwin. Australian support staff was reportedly sent footage of bowling via social media. The uncanny similarities between him and Ashwin helped the Australian team. So they decided to fly the youngster to Bangalore for a four-day training camp at the KSCA ground in nearby Alur.

Australia, who identify Ashwin as one of the biggest hurdles in their hopes of winning the Border Gavaskar test series in India, is making use of Pithiya to prepare for the threat that India International possesses.

Having already prepared some pitches that resemble the kind of wickets that would be prepared in the actual test series, Australia is practising playing Pithiya, hoping to get used to the sort of impact Ashwin could create on such pitches.

Who is the bowler ?

The 21-year-old made his first-class debut for Baroda in December last year. While the young spinner’s phone is filled with pictures of his idol  Ashwin, at the moment he aspires to meet his Idol one day. Pithiya would certainly have the ambition of representing his country like his Idol Ashwin does. But for now, he has been identified as the most important part of the preparatory plan for the Australian team, that Australia has created to defeat the Indian team.

‘Pritesh Joshi, who was also at training on Thursday giving throwdown with the ‘side arm’ aid, was the one who first brought Pithiya to the attention of assistant coach Andre Borovec, while Joshi also help arrange for Mehrotra  Shashank, a left-arm spinner who played first-class cricket for Hyderabad, to attend the camp.

“The Australian batsmen were also tested out by their own self-described “throwdown specialist” Khaleel Shariff. Khaleel Sharif has worked with numerous Indian Premier League teams and he was already known to Australian coach Andrew McDonald and victori from their time at Royal Challenger Bangalore.

About Maheesh Pithiya

Pithiya trained with Yusuf and Irfan Pathan at their Academy in Vadodara before he made his first-class debut for Baroda in December, picking up 8 wickets in 4 Ranji Trophy matches while scoring 116 runs with the best of 52.

The 21-year-old is staying in the Australian team hotel in Bengaluru and travels in the team bus with the test cricketers for the training session, getting a first-hand opportunity to interact with world-class cricketers like Nathan Ryan and David Warner and Steve Smith among others.

Pithiya, who grew up in Junagadh, did not have a television set at his home which meant he had not seen Ashwin bowl till he was around 11. When he finally saw the off-spinner ball in the home series against the West Indies in 2013, he was pleasantly surprised to find out that his action was similar to one of India’s best spinners in Test cricket and whom he had Idolised since then.
