Traffic: There May Be Heavy Traffic Jam In Manali And Atal Tunnel On New Year’s Eve, Police Warned

Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla and tourist city Manali as well as all the popular hill stations of Himachal Pradesh may once again face heavy traffic jams this weekend on New Year’s Eve. The local culture and cuisine will be showcased along with the week-long Manali Carnival starting from January 1.

Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla and tourist city Manali as well as all the popular hill stations of Himachal Pradesh may once again face heavy traffic jams this weekend on New Year’s Eve. The local culture and cuisine will be showcased along with the week-long Manali Carnival starting from January 1. There are full expectations that the inflow of tourists to Himachal Pradesh will be the highest this season. Himachal Pradesh Police and all the local police administrations are fully geared up for the increase in tourist inflow, due to which there are full possibilities of another chaotic weekend. Just last week, due to the disruption in the traffic system, there were long queues at hill stations.

Due to New Year, all the hotels in Kullu and Manali of Himachal Pradesh are already full and there are full expectations of more than one lakh tourists entering Himachal Pradesh on the eve of New Year. In Kullu, Manali as well as in neighboring districts Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh Police has issued guidelines to tourists from outside states to take precautions to avoid heavy traffic jams. It has also been said by Himachal Pradesh Police Authority that strict action will be taken as soon as information is received with immediate effect against tourists from outside states violating any kind of traffic order, committing hooliganism or performing stunts on moving vehicles during the weekend period.

Beyond Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla and tourist town Manali, popular tourist destinations like Atal Tunnel, Rohtang and Sissu also saw a huge crowd of tourists last weekend during the Christmas festival. Atal Tunnel Rohtang, the world’s tallest single-tube tunnel at over ten thousand feet high, saw a record forty-two thousand five hundred twelve vehicles crossing between Sunday this week and Christmas Eve on Monday . Even during the Christmas weekend, a record entry of fifty-five thousand three hundred and forty-five vehicles was recorded in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh.

Lahaul-Spiti District Police Administration SP Mayank Chaudhary has made a special appeal to the tourists from all outside states going towards Atal Tunnel Rohtang and Sissu to be responsible and exercise caution. Lahaul-Spiti SP Mayank Chaudhary has said, “We welcome all the tourists to enjoy the New Year celebrations. However, SP Mayank Chaudhary said that all the tourists should not pollute the valley in any way.” Earlier, a Mahindra Thar SUV was found driving on Chandra river, which was also fined for violating traffic rules and causing air pollution. Lahaul Spiti SP Mayank Choudhary said, “Hooliganism, such as driving at high speed with open doors and under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, overspeeding, parking at an unauthorized place or not wearing seat belt. Driving without wearing a mask or violating traffic rules will also be dealt with strictly.”

Earlier, Himachal Pradesh Police Administration had issued guidelines for the drivers from outside states going towards all the hill stations. The current Director General of Police of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Sanjay Kundu had also appealed to all the tourists from outside states entering Himachal Pradesh to give priority to safe travel and follow the traffic rules properly. Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police Dr Sanjay Kundu said, “The local district administration and the entire police force of both Lahaul-Spiti as well as Kullu districts are working commendably 24×7 to manage the traffic smoothly.” Kullu district police administration has also said that all tourists coming from outside states are being strictly monitored through CCTV cameras and drones. All the tourists from outside states have also been advised by the teams of Kullu District Police Administration to exercise caution regarding slippery road conditions due to snow and black ice in the evening.
