Himachal News: Government Departments Will Not Buy Diesel-Petrol Vehicles From January 1, Chief Minister Gave Instructions

Honourable Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has said that the Himachal Pradesh Government is going to promote e-vehicles in the entire Himachal Pradesh. Complete consideration is being given to running e-buses on all long routes in Himachal Pradesh.

With a view to make Himachal Pradesh a green energy state and to encourage e-vehicles, Honourable Chief Minister Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has issued guidelines to all the government departments of Himachal Pradesh Government not to buy diesel or petrol vehicles from January 1, 2024. CM Sukhu said that only if absolutely necessary, Himachal Pradesh Transport Department will be able to purchase petrol or diesel vehicles only after the complete approval of the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet.

In his very first budget, CM Sukhu took important steps towards changing the system. The vision of the Himachal Pradesh government on electric e-vehicles in Himachal Pradesh was also made clear and CM Sukhu himself went ahead and announced the introduction of electric vehicles (e-vehicles) in Himachal Pradesh. Due to all the efforts of the Himachal Pradesh Government, today the number of e-vehicles in the government departments of Himachal Pradesh has increased to one hundred and eighty-five, while the number of private electric vehicles registered in Himachal Pradesh has increased to two thousand seven hundred and thirty-three.

CM Sukhu said that the Himachal Pradesh government is making every effort to promote e-vehicles in Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh Transport Department is the first department under which the use of e-vehicles has been started and every effort is being made to ensure operation of electric vehicles in all the government departments of Himachal Pradesh in a phased manner. CM Sukhu said that electric vehicles are not only a new beginning, but also shows the entire commitment of the Himachal Pradesh government towards environmental protection.

CM Sukhu said that we will have to make the environment even more safe for all the coming generations and we all will have to start working together from today itself to make the environment safe. To meet the requirement of vehicles in all the government departments of Himachal Pradesh Government, the Himachal Pradesh Government has given permission to provide e-taxi on contract. Also, under the Rs 680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Self-Employment Start-up Scheme, e-taxi permits are being provided to the unemployed youth of Himachal Pradesh by the Himachal Pradesh Government.

Fifty percent subsidy is also being given on purchasing e-taxi in Himachal Pradesh. E-taxi can be easily charged at home also, Himachal Pradesh government is also preparing infrastructure for charging of e-taxi. To promote e-vehicles in Himachal Pradesh, an important decision has been taken to develop six highways of Himachal Pradesh as green corridors. Fifty-four locations have been finalized by the Himachal Pradesh Transport Department for setting up e-vehicle charging stations in Himachal Pradesh, with some charging stations almost completely ready.

Apart from this, the entire process of converting all the diesel vehicles of Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) into electric buses in a phased manner has been started.

Recently, by organizing a meeting with all the companies manufacturing e-buses, guidelines have been issued by the Himachal Pradesh government to prepare electric buses keeping in mind the geographical conditions of Himachal Pradesh.

CM Sukhu said that the Himachal Pradesh government is considering running electric buses on all long routes also. All electric buses of Type-1, 2 and 3 are being included in the fleet of Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) in a phased manner, so as to achieve the important target of making Himachal Pradesh a clean and green energy state by 31 March 2026.
