Godhra Files is the Gujrat Riot that took place in the year 2002. It is said to be an act of communal violence in Gujarat. The violence started with the burning of a train in Godhra on 27th February 2022. This caused the death of 58 Hindu pilgrims and Karsevaks, which were returning from Ayodhya. These initial breakouts were followed by the violent act in Ahmedabad. Many breakouts against the Muslim community took place. 

As per the official figures, riots ended with, 

  • 1,044 dead of which 790 were Muslim and 254 in Hindus 
  • 233 went missing.
  • 2,500 were reported to be injured. 

Many brutal killings, rapes, widespread looting, and destruction of property happened.

Narendra Modi who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat was accused of violence. 

2012 Modi was cleared from the case by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by Supreme Court. 

GODHRA TRAIN BURNING 

Sabarmati Express was returning from Ayodhya to Ahmedabad on the morning of 27th February 2002. The train was stopped at the Godhra. An argument was between the passengers and railway vendors. The argument increased resulting in violence. For uncertain reasons, 5 coaches of the train caught fire with people trapped inside it. 59 people, out of which 9 were men, 25 women, and 25 children burned to death. 

POST GODHRA VIOLENCE

In response to the train burn which was present as an act of communal act, many violent acts took place against the Muslim community. More than 230 mosques and 274 dargahs were destroyed. Almost 150,000 people went missing and 200 police officers died in the riots. 

CONCLUSION 

The Godhra case was one of the most brutal and violent riots in the history of the country. 

The scholar who, studies various historical events, does not consider it to be a communal act. Many consider the involvement of political parties in these riots.
