SC adjourns Palghar lynching case for 2 weeks

The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned for two weeks as the Maharashtra government sought time to respond on the transfer of probe to the CBI in the Palghar lynching case in which two sadhus were lynched.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala adjourned the matter on the request of the counsel appearing for the Maharashtra government.

The counsel told the bench that the government has given consent for a CBI inquiry into the incident but further instructions from the government are awaited, so the matter be adjourned for two weeks.
Earlier, the apex court had asked the Maharashtra government to file an affidavit stating that it was referring to the probe. It told the Maharashtra government that while the state has no objection to transfer the Palgarh lynching case to the CBI, it can hand over the case to the agency itself.
The Maharashtra government had told the top court that it has agreed to a CBI inquiry into the matter.
A batch of pleas were filed in the apex court seeking a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or the CBI into the Palghar lynching case in which two sadhus were lynched to death.
The petition sought a CBI or court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the incident in Palghar district.
The Maharashtra government had earlier informed the Supreme Court that all errant police officers were punished or suspended from services
The pleas have also sought a probe by the CBI and registration of an FIR against the police officials who allegedly failed to stop the mob from violating the lockdown norms.
On the night of April 16, two sadhus and their driver were traveling from Kandivali in Mumbai to attend a funeral in Gujarat’s Surat amid the nationwide lockdown, when their vehicle was stopped and lynched by a mob in Gadchinchile village. He was attacked and murdered in attendance. of police officers. (ANI)
