Himachal Pradesh Flash Flood Alert: 9 Districts on Watch as Heavy Rain Continues, IMD Issues Fresh Warnings

Himachal Pradesh remains under a flash flood watch across nine districts as heavy monsoon rain continues. IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts amid widespread rainfall.

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh continues to remain on alert as persistent monsoon rainfall has prompted a flash flood watch across nine districts, raising concerns over possible disruption in vulnerable areas.

The flash flood warning covers Sirmaur, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, Solan, Lahaul and Spiti, and Kinnaur, according to the latest weather alert issued by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The alert comes as the latest spell of intense monsoon rain is expected to gradually weaken across the state. However, authorities and residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious as heavy rainfall may still trigger sudden flooding, landslides and waterlogging in some locations.

IMD Downgrades Rainfall Warning for Two Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on July 20 and 21. The warning has now been downgraded to an orange alert for Kangra and Mandi for Wednesday.

The weather department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in these two districts, indicating that the risk of weather-related disruption remains.

A yellow alert has also been issued for five districts, with the IMD warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Kangra and Sirmaur Record Highest Rainfall

During the last 24 hours, Kangra and Sirmaur recorded the highest rainfall in Himachal Pradesh. Widespread showers were reported across several parts of the state as the monsoon system continued to remain active.

The persistent rainfall has also brought down maximum temperatures by around 2°C to 6°C across most areas. Despite the drop in daytime temperatures, minimum temperatures have remained close to normal levels.

Residents Advised to Remain Alert

With nine districts under a flash flood watch and heavy rainfall warnings continuing in parts of the state, residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas are advised to stay alert.

People should avoid unnecessary travel through vulnerable areas, especially near overflowing rivers, streams and waterlogged roads. The situation is expected to improve gradually as the current spell of intense rainfall weakens, but isolated heavy showers may continue in some areas.

Weather officials are closely monitoring the situation as Himachal Pradesh continues to experience the impact of the active monsoon season.
