Bir-Billing Paragliding to Remain Closed from July 15 to September 15 Due to Monsoon Safety Concerns
Adventure enthusiasts planning to visit the world-famous Bir-Billing paragliding destination will have to put their plans on hold, as all paragliding activities will remain suspended from July 15 to September 15 due to the annual monsoon safety closure.
Adventure enthusiasts planning to visit the world-famous Bir-Billing paragliding destination will have to put their plans on hold, as all paragliding activities will remain suspended from July 15 to September 15 due to the annual monsoon safety closure.
The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of both pilots and tourists during the monsoon season, when unpredictable weather, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and poor visibility make flying conditions highly unsafe.
According to official sources, the suspension applies to both tandem and solo paragliding flights. All registered paragliding associations and individual operators have been directed to halt flying operations and withdraw their pilots until the ban is lifted.
Monsoon Safety Takes Priority
Authorities say the temporary suspension is a routine annual practice aimed at preventing accidents during adverse weather conditions. Flying activities are expected to resume after September 15, subject to favourable weather and approval from the district administration.
Officials emphasized that safety remains the top priority, as weather conditions during the monsoon can change rapidly, increasing the risk of aviation-related incidents.
Tourism-Dependent Families to Feel the Impact
While the suspension is necessary for safety, it is expected to affect the local economy significantly.
According to Anurag Sharma, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and President of the Bir-Billing Paragliding Association, more than 5,000 people are directly or indirectly dependent on tourism and paragliding-related businesses in the region.
Around 250 local paragliding pilots rely on the sport for their livelihood, while nearly 100 taxi operators, who ferry tourists and pilots between Bir and the Billing take-off site, will also experience a temporary loss of income during the two-month closure.
Bir-Billing Remains a Global Adventure Tourism Hub
Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Dhauladhar mountain range in Kangra district, Bir-Billing is internationally recognised as one of the world’s premier paragliding destinations. The location has hosted several prestigious national and international paragliding competitions and attracts thousands of domestic and international tourists every year.
The famous Billing take-off site, situated at an altitude of nearly 8,000 feet, lies around 14 kilometres north of Bir, while the landing site is located at approximately 4,500 feet above sea level.
Apart from adventure sports, Bir-Billing is equally renowned for its peaceful Buddhist monasteries, meditation centres, eco-tourism, and spiritual retreats, making it one of Himachal Pradesh’s most popular tourist destinations.
Paragliding Expected to Resume After September 15
Authorities have clarified that the annual suspension is purely a preventive measure and is intended to ensure the safety of visitors during the monsoon season. Paragliding operations are expected to restart after September 15, provided weather conditions improve and the district administration grants permission.
