Toronto witnessed a tragic incident on Saturday evening when a shooting near the popular Salsa on St. Clair Festival left two people dead and five others injured, sending hundreds of festival-goers into panic.

The shooting took place near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where thousands had gathered to enjoy one of Toronto’s largest annual celebrations of Latin American culture.

Police Secure Area, Search for Suspect Continues

According to Toronto Police spokesperson Shannon Eames, two victims died at the scene, while five others suffered gunshot injuries and were rushed for medical treatment.

Authorities initially warned residents about an active shooter situation and advised everyone to avoid the area. Although police later confirmed that the scene had been secured, they stated that the suspect or suspects remain at large, and the investigation is ongoing.

Festival Visitors Describe Moments of Fear

Eyewitnesses recalled scenes of confusion and fear as gunfire erupted during the festival.

Valerie Rodriguez, who was sitting outside a nearby restaurant, said people suddenly began screaming and running in every direction.

“We were told to get down on the ground. It was terrifying because no one knew what was happening,” she said.

Festival vendor Patsy Gutierrez said she was serving customers when she noticed a massive crowd rushing away from the area.

“Everyone became frantic, and we immediately stopped serving people. Events like this are meant to bring communities together, and it’s heartbreaking to see violence happen here,” she said.

Large Police Presence Remains at Festival Site

Police officers continued to maintain a heavy presence around the festival venue as investigators examined the crime scene and collected evidence.

The Salsa on St. Clair Festival is one of Toronto’s most popular cultural events, attracting thousands of visitors every year with live music, dance performances, authentic Latin American cuisine, and community celebrations.

Ontario Premier Reacts to the Tragedy

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed grief over the incident in a social media statement, calling the shooting “senseless violence.”

He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the attack.

Rare Incident in One of North America’s Safest Cities

Toronto is widely regarded as one of North America’s safest major cities. Public shootings involving multiple victims are uncommon, making Saturday’s tragedy particularly shocking for residents and visitors alike.

Police have urged anyone with information, videos, or eyewitness accounts to come forward as investigators continue efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.
