The United States has launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran, escalating tensions in the Middle East just weeks after both nations agreed to a fragile ceasefire. The latest operation came in response to alleged Iranian attacks on commercial vessels passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces carried out precision strikes on July 7, targeting more than 80 Iranian military sites. The operation focused on air defence systems, command-and-control facilities, coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile infrastructure, and over 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast attack boats positioned near the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM said the objective of the operation was to weaken Iran’s capability to launch further attacks on international shipping and safeguard one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported multiple explosions in the southern port city of Sirik, Bandar Abbas, and on Qeshm Island during the early hours of Wednesday. Iranian authorities have not yet released an official assessment of the reported strikes.

The United States has accused Iran of targeting three commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz in recent days. The ships identified include the Marshall Islands-flagged MT Al Rekayyat, the Saudi Arabia-flagged MT Wedyan, and the Liberian-flagged MT Cyprus Prosperity.

In its statement, CENTCOM described the attacks as a serious breach of international maritime security and said the actions violated the recently agreed ceasefire. The command also warned that US forces remain prepared to respond to any further escalation.

Although Washington and Tehran had previously agreed to halt hostilities while continuing diplomatic negotiations toward a broader political settlement, the ceasefire remains under increasing strain.

Political opposition to the agreement has also emerged on both sides. In Iran, protests have reportedly targeted senior officials involved in the negotiations, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. In the United States, several Republican leaders have criticised President Donald Trump’s approach to the ceasefire agreement, raising further uncertainty over the future of diplomatic efforts.

With military action resuming and tensions once again rising around the Strait of Hormuz, global attention remains focused on whether both countries can prevent the situation from escalating into a wider regional conflict.
