A performer speaking during the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ignited controversy on Sunday after making remarks targeting former US President Donald Trump before a gathering of hundreds of thousands of mourners in Tehran.

Mohammad Rasouli, an Iranian poet who addressed the crowd, delivered a speech that prompted chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” from attendees. During his address, Rasouli questioned why Trump was still alive, a statement that was met with applause and cheers from sections of the audience.

The funeral procession attracted a significantly larger turnout than previous ceremonies, with mourners dressed in black carrying banners, flags, and portraits honoring Khamenei. Several participants were also seen displaying messages directed against the United States and Israel.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for decades, was reportedly killed at the age of 86 in an airstrike on February 28 during the early stages of the Iran conflict. His funeral has become a major political event, potentially strengthening Iran’s ruling establishment and boosting the position of the country’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

The ceremony comes at a sensitive moment for Iran as it navigates diplomatic discussions with the United States and seeks to maintain its strategic influence over the Strait of Hormuz. Negotiations aimed at reaching a long-term resolution to the conflict remain suspended, while concerns persist over the possibility of renewed military action involving Israel.

Observers believe the large-scale funeral gathering may reinforce domestic political support for Iran’s leadership as regional tensions continue to shape developments across the Middle East.
