In a move reflecting respect for leaders beyond political differences, Himachal Pradesh Industries, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour and Employment Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to replace the damaged foundation and inauguration plaques installed at the historic Jong Bridge.
The Jong Bridge, located near Jong village in Sirmaur district’s Shillai Assembly constituency, plays a crucial role in connecting Himachal Pradesh with neighbouring Uttarakhand. The bridge has become an important route for thousands of residents, improving transportation and easing the movement of goods between the two states.
The damaged plaques carry the names of two former Chief Ministers—Congress veteran Virbhadra Singh and BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal—who were associated with different phases of the bridge project.
Speaking on the decision, Harshwardhan Chauhan said that the contributions of both leaders towards the development of Himachal Pradesh should be respected regardless of political ideology. He emphasised that the plaques are not just stone structures but symbols of the efforts made by leaders who worked for the state’s progress.
“Former Chief Ministers Virbhadra Singh and Prem Kumar Dhumal made remarkable contributions to the development of Himachal Pradesh. Their efforts in strengthening infrastructure and improving the lives of people will always be remembered,” Chauhan said.
He further stated that development is a continuous journey where every government and leader plays a role. Therefore, acknowledging the contributions of those who helped shape the state’s infrastructure should rise above party lines.
The Jong Bridge remains a lifeline for the remote Trans-Giri region of Sirmaur district, significantly improving connectivity and bringing better access to nearby areas of Uttarakhand.
Following Chauhan’s directions, the Public Works Department has been asked to replace the damaged plaques at the earliest, ensuring that the contributions of both former Chief Ministers remain preserved for future generations.
