Iran Condemns US Attack on Commercial Vessel After Three Indian Sailors Reported Missing Near Oman

Tensions in the Middle East have intensified after Iran strongly condemned what it described as a United States attack on a commercial vessel near the coast of Oman, an incident that reportedly left three Indian sailors missing and triggered a major rescue operation.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei accused the United States of targeting an Indian commercial vessel and described the incident as an example of “armed robbery” and “state piracy.” The remarks came amid growing concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Baghaei expressed condolences to the families of the affected Indian sailors and called on the international community to take action against Washington.
“The attacks on Indian commercial vessels that have resulted in the loss of Indian lives demonstrate a dangerous pattern of unlawful actions that threaten international peace and maritime security,” he said.
India Confirms Rescue of 21 Crew Members
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that a commercial vessel identified as Settebello came under attack off the coast of Oman.
According to the MEA, the vessel had 24 Indian crew members onboard. Rescue teams have successfully saved 21 crew members, while three Indian nationals remain missing.
“We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel off the coast of Oman. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 have been rescued, while three remain missing. Our Embassy in Oman is closely coordinating with local authorities and monitoring ongoing search and rescue operations,” the ministry said.
Indian diplomatic officials are working closely with Omani authorities as search efforts continue in the region.
Growing Concerns Over Shipping Security in the Region
The latest incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Middle Eastern waters, a region that handles a significant portion of global oil and commercial shipping traffic.
The Ministry of External Affairs described the continuing attacks on shipping routes as “deeply worrying” and linked the incidents to the broader regional conflict.
Security experts warn that repeated attacks on commercial vessels could disrupt international trade, increase insurance costs for shipping companies, and further destabilize an already volatile region.
India Calls for Immediate De-escalation
Amid rising geopolitical tensions, India has renewed its call for restraint and diplomacy.
The MEA emphasized the need for immediate de-escalation and urged all parties involved to pursue peaceful negotiations.
“India continues to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and restoring peace and stability in the region,” the ministry stated.
As rescue operations continue and international reactions emerge, the incident is likely to intensify global discussions on maritime security, freedom of navigation, and the growing risks faced by commercial shipping in conflict-prone waters.
