The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a commanding victory in the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation (MC) elections, winning 11 out of the 17 wards and comfortably crossing the majority mark. The election results, declared on Sunday, mark a significant political comeback for the BJP in one of Himachal Pradesh’s most prominent urban local bodies.
The Congress managed to win only five wards, while one seat was claimed by an Independent candidate. The outcome reflects strong voter support for the BJP and highlights shifting political dynamics in several traditionally Congress-dominated areas.
Major Setback for Prominent Leaders
One of the biggest talking points of the election was the defeat of several high-profile candidates. Former BJP Mayor Onkar Chand Nehria and former Deputy Mayor Tajinder Kaur, who contested as Independents after being denied BJP tickets, failed to secure victories. Former Congress Mayor Rajni and senior Congress leader Suresh Kumar also suffered unexpected defeats.
Political observers believe these results indicate that voters largely preferred party-backed candidates over individual political influence.
BJP Registers Strong Wins Across Key Wards
The BJP began its winning run in Forsythganj (Ward No. 1), where Rekha Devi defeated Congress candidate Himanshi by 47 votes.
In Bhasunag (Ward No. 2), BJP candidate Shamsher Singh Nehria successfully retained the ward, defeating former mayor Onkar Chand Nehria, who contested as an Independent. McLeodganj (Ward No. 3) also remained in BJP’s control as Asha Devi emerged victorious.
One of the party’s most impressive performances came in Kotwali Bazar (Ward No. 6), where Karishma Chettri secured a massive victory margin after polling 866 votes. BJP candidate Meena Kumari also delivered a landslide win in Badol (Ward No. 12), receiving nearly 1,000 votes.
The saffron party further strengthened its position by winning Dari (Ward No. 13), Khaniara (Ward No. 15), Sidhpur (Ward No. 16), and Sidhbari (Ward No. 17), areas that have historically witnessed strong competition between the two major parties.
Congress Retains a Few Strongholds
Despite the overall defeat, Congress managed to retain several important wards. Outgoing Mayor Neenu Sharma successfully defended Kashmir House (Ward No. 4), winning by a significant margin of 358 votes.
Congress candidates also emerged victorious in Khajanchi Mohalla (Ward No. 5), Shyamnagar (Ward No. 10), Ramnagar (Ward No. 11), and Kand (Ward No. 14). Among these, Anoj Bisht recorded one of the highest vote counts of the election, polling 1,050 votes in Kand ward.
Independent Candidate Creates Surprise
The only Independent victory came from Sakoh (Ward No. 9), where Naresh Kumar outperformed both BJP and Congress candidates in a closely watched three-way contest. His win stood out as one of the biggest surprises of the election.
What the Results Mean
The Dharamsala Municipal Corporation election results represent a major boost for the BJP ahead of future local political battles in Himachal Pradesh. The party not only secured a comfortable majority but also managed to break into areas previously considered Congress strongholds.
For Congress, the results raise important questions about organizational strength and voter outreach at the grassroots level. Meanwhile, the defeat of several veteran leaders signals a changing political landscape in Dharamsala, where voters appear increasingly focused on party performance and local development issues.
With 11 seats in its kitty, the BJP is now set to take control of the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation and shape the city’s development agenda for the coming years.
