Shimla Panchayat Elections 2026: 80% Voter Turnout Recorded, First-Time Voters Show Massive Enthusiasm
The first phase of the Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections in Shimla witnessed an impressive voter turnout of nearly 80 per cent on Tuesday, reflecting strong public participation and growing awareness among rural voters.

According to official figures, out of 181,037 registered voters in the district, nearly 144,186 people exercised their democratic right across around 150 gram panchayats. Voting was conducted through ballot papers and continued peacefully till 3 PM.
The elections saw enthusiastic participation from every section of society, including first-time voters, senior citizens and even centenarian voters. Long queues were visible outside polling booths in several villages as people stepped out with hopes for better infrastructure, improved public facilities and drug-free communities.
First-Time Voters Add Energy to Democratic Process
Young voters played a major role in boosting the election atmosphere across the district. Many first-time voters described the experience as emotional and memorable.
Chandresh, a first-time voter from Shimla district, said she was excited to participate in the democratic process for the first time. She expressed hope that the newly elected representatives would focus on the overall development of villages and work towards improving local facilities.
The enthusiasm among youth voters was clearly visible at polling stations, where many young residents arrived early to cast their votes.
Villagers Vote for Better Roads and Water Supply
Local residents said that basic infrastructure issues remained among the biggest concerns in rural areas.
Pusha, a resident of Chamiana Panchayat, stated that she voted with expectations of better roads and an improved drinking water supply. According to her, these issues continue to affect daily life in many villages.
Many voters also expressed hope that the new representatives would focus on employment opportunities, healthcare facilities and maintaining peaceful, drug-free villages.
Next Phases of PRI Elections Scheduled on May 28 and May 30
Officials confirmed that the second phase of the PRI elections in Shimla district will be conducted on May 28 across another 150 panchayats, while the third and final phase is scheduled for May 30.
With strong voter participation in the first phase, authorities are expecting a similarly enthusiastic response in the upcoming rounds of polling.
