After days of intense heatwave conditions, Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness a major weather change as widespread rainfall, hailstorms and thunderstorms are expected to hit several parts of the state from May 22. The State Meteorological Centre has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts, warning residents to remain cautious during the next two days.

According to the latest weather forecast, heavy rain accompanied by hailstorms, lightning and strong winds may affect several hill districts, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching temperatures recorded across the state in recent days.

Orange Alert Issued for Five Districts

The Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi and Chamba districts for May 22. These areas are likely to experience intense thunderstorms, hailstorms, lightning activity and gusty winds at isolated places.

Officials have advised people living in vulnerable areas to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather conditions and stay updated with local advisories.

Yellow Alert for Several Other Districts

Apart from the orange alert regions, a yellow alert has also been issued for Solan, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Sirmaur districts. These districts may witness thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds during the day.

The weather department has predicted widespread rainfall across Himachal Pradesh till May 23, while light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue in the middle and higher hill regions between May 24 and May 26.

However, weather conditions are likely to improve from May 27 onwards, with dry conditions expected across most parts of the state.

Himachal Witnessed Severe Heat Before Weather Change

Before the fresh spell of rain, several districts in Himachal Pradesh experienced unusually high temperatures over the past 24 hours. Areas including Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur and Una witnessed intense heatwave-like conditions.

Meteorological data showed that minimum temperatures at many weather stations remained 2°C to 7°C above normal, while maximum temperatures were recorded 4°C to 5°C higher than average seasonal levels.

Una Recorded Highest Temperature in the State

Among the major towns, Una remained the hottest place in Himachal Pradesh with a maximum temperature of 44.3°C. On the other hand, Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti was recorded as the coldest location with a minimum temperature of 6.2°C.

  • Shimla – 30.5°C
  • Dharamsala – 36°C
  • Manali – 28.6°C
  • Kangra – 38.4°C
  • Mandi – 38.8°C
  • Solan – 36°C
  • Sundernagar – 39.9°C
  • Kufri – 25°C
  • Kalpa – 26.5°C
  • Keylong – 21°C
  • Nahan – 38.7°C
  • Bhuntar – 35.1°C
  • Chamba – 34.7°C

Relief Expected After Heatwave Conditions

The upcoming rain spell is expected to bring significant relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions in Himachal Pradesh. However, authorities have warned that hailstorms and lightning may cause temporary disruptions in hilly regions, especially during evening hours.
